The BTEC First Certificate in Health and Social Care Level 2 has been designed to explore a wide range of careers in Health and Social Care.

The course offers the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in preparation for entry into the health and social care sector, or progression on to the BTEC National Diploma or Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care and the Extended Certificate in Child Care.

There is a planned programme of work placement on the course which allows first-hand experience in a range of health and social care environments.

In addition there is the opportunity to visit a range of different care sectors and providers, allowing students to gain a breadth of experience and knowledge about local provision.

The course provides opportunities for two vocational placements which are vital in allowing you to provide evidence for your course work. Some travel to placement may be necessary.

The modules include; Communication and Individual Rights, Health and Social Care Values, Healthy Living, Vocational Practice, Human Lifespan Development and Creative and Therapeutic Activities.

The Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) is mandatory for work experience and any subsequent employment in the health and care sector.

Learners are required to take GCSE programmes in English and Maths if these are not achieved at Grade 4 in addition to the main qualification.

Entry Requirements

General Entry Requirements:
Vocational programmes require a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 3.

Subject Specific Requirements:
English Language grade 3.

How will I be assessed?

The course is delivered over one academic year.

The assessment is by coursework with two externally set exams.

On completion of the course the final grades range from PP (Pass) to D*D* (Distinction*). This qualification is equivalent to two GCSEs.

Where does it lead?

This qualification is a direct route into employment in the care sector e.g. residential/nursing homes. It is also a route on to a Level 3 course.

Students on this course have progressed on to: The BTEC National Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care or modern apprenticeships in a care setting (NVQ).
