Would you enjoy learning about how things work, how science affects the world around you and how it is used in the workplace and in industry?
If you enjoy learning about science through a variety of different teaching methods including practical work, presentations and group discussion and if you like to work with state of the art facilities and technology, then the BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science is the course for you.
The course, which is equivalent to 3 A-level subjects, will equip you with the knowledge and practical skills required to enter university to study science related courses or to work as a Science Technician.
We are looking for students who are lively and enthusiastic, and who enjoy discussion and group work.
You will be willing to learn to work independently, using your initiative, in order to research your chosen topics and you will develop your communication skills through discussion and presentations. You will be hard working and organised as the coursework deadlines are demanding.
General Entry Requirements:
Vocational programmes require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4.
Subject Specific Requirements:
English Language grade 4, Mathematics grade 4 and Combined Science grade 4 – 4 or two separate sciences from Biology grade 4, Chemistry grade 4 or Physics grade 4. Alternatively, English Language grade 4, Mathematics grade 4 and BTEC Level 2 Science at Merit.
How will I be assessed?
You will work on 13 units of which 4 units are assessed externally by an exam. For the other units, your teacher will assess your work and this will be checked by external moderators.
The internally assessed units are entirely made up of coursework including practical work, presentations, posters and reports.
The assessment is ongoing and therefore it is easy to assess your progress in terms of UCAS points.
Where does it lead?
The vast majority of BTEC Applied Science students gain careers in medical laboratory analysis, biomedical science, forensics, paramedics, pharmacology, research, teaching or nursing.
PLEASE NOTE This course is NOT suitable if you want to pursue a career in Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Science.
